Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Alleges Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the original creators of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner Unilever stopped the introduction of an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he will personally create the controversial flavor as part of an individual series showcasing causes the company was prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Between Creators versus Corporate Owner
This latest development intensifies the continuing disagreement between the world-famous ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the British packaged goods corporation which acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders have claimed that the parent company and its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented their company from "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Flavor as an Emblem for Support
Mr. Cohen revealed through an Instagram video how he's developing a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas regarding the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder stated from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has emerged as an emblem for support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, which match those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Developments
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series will be developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company that originally created several years back to support former political contender Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts plus Upcoming Plans
The founder indicated that he will create additional ice cream flavors that address issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at the company in September, following many years with the organization, citing worries that its independence was compromised after Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen remarked how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
"My heart compels me to continue to work inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values that established its foundation while upholding for decades," he explained to media outlets.
