The direst projected effects of the climate emergency for the UK have been outlined by researchers, encompassing a scorching 4C jump in mean temperatures to a two-metre rise in sea levels. An alternative projection foresees a plunge of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset food production and energy demand.

Credible Extremes, Not Guarantees

These effects, some of which are associated with climate tipping points, are viewed as low probability but possible. The scientists explained that these scenarios filled a gap in risk assessment that had left the UK not ready for catastrophic possibilities.

"The worst-case scenarios we have outlined aren’t predictions, but they are plausible," stated the lead researcher who oversaw the study. "The UK has been formulating policy lacking the frameworks to plan for worst-case scenarios. We've now supplied policymakers what they need to prepare for environmental results they wish to avoid, but can’t afford to ignore."

A Spectrum of Harsh Climate Possibilities

A second set of dire projections details the projected severity of harsh climate between now and the end of the century. These indicate that temperatures could skyrocket in certain periods by up to 6C above average, while precipitation could be triple normal levels.

The likelihood of the catastrophic events happening cannot be precisely determined due to uncertainty about what action will be taken to tackle climate change and how the Earth's systems will respond. This analysis was likened to national security risk assessments or resilience checks for financial systems.

Critical Outcome Details

• Severe Heating: Planetary heating soaring past 4C by 2100 could occur if international cooperation breaks down or if powerful amplifying effects including the Amazon rainforest perishing emit its vast reserves of carbon. This would lead to extreme and prolonged heatwaves and water shortages plaguing the UK in summer.
• Atlantic Current Collapse: A key circulation system, the North Atlantic current, is losing strength and showing signs of collapse due to global heating. A full shutdown commencing by 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Farming would be severely challenged and freshwater availability would be completely altered," said Arnell.
• Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could occur if polar ice in the polar regions collapse rapidly, submerging low-lying areas. Unlike the other scenarios, this threat is already known by coastal engineers.
• Clean Air Warming: Temperatures could also be pushed higher by about 0.75C if industrial aerosols is drastically reduced. This paradoxical outcome occurs because tiny specks from fossil fuel combustion block solar radiation from warming the ground.

Building Resilience Against the Unthinkable

These dire projections could be used to inform the building of long-term infrastructure, such as new towns, power generation facilities and flood defences. Awareness of these climate risks could also hasten the transition to slash carbon pollution.

The study formulated the extreme models using a combination of real-world events, digital projections and scientific theory. The scenarios exclude international cascading effects such as the global food shortages and resource wars.

The project was commissioned as part of a government’s climate resilience programme. Independent analyses have cautioned that insufficient focus was being allocated to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.

An independent advisory body has stated that the UK must "prepare for two degrees of warming" and assess the risks for 4C. Previous adaptation plans have been described as being "insufficient" by certain experts.
