The beloved police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part series written by the show's creator starts production in Belfast this spring, according to the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."

The last season concluded in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.

However, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC haven't revealed when the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
