The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has stated that the series will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on the audio platform and the video site.
