The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
