Venus Williams, 45, Awarded Special Entry for First Australian Open in Half a Decade.
A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.
Historic Return to Melbourne Park
Tournament officials confirmed on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the second round before bowing out in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.
Preparing for the Summer Swing
The tennis star had earlier stated in November her intention to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, two weeks before the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.
Her last appearance in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.
"I’m excited to return in the country and looking forward to competing during the summer season," Venus said. "I have experienced so many incredible memories there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to go back to a place that has meant so much to my career."

Officials pointed out that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to take part in an Open's singles competition, eclipsing the record formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
