A PI integral to the lawsuit filed by Prince Harry and several claimants against the publisher of the Daily Mail has asserted his autograph on an prior testimonial document was a “fake”, the superior court has been told.

Gavin Burrows, associated with the most severe claims of unlawful information gathering made by multiple high-profile figures including the music icon and Doreen Lawrence, disavowed his alleged confession, declaring it was “wholly fabricated”.

Background of the Purported Confession

Burrows had allegedly claimed in a testimonial from 2021 that he and his associates obtained data by hacking voice messages, monitoring home telephones and placing listening devices in cars. He also allegedly said he had worked on behalf of the Mail on Sunday.

The publishing group is accused by the group of carrying out or authorizing illegal acts such as employing PIs to place bugs inside cars, deceptively obtaining private records and accessing private phone conversations. The defendant rejects the claims and is defending the legal action.

Withdrawal and New Allegations

Several of the individuals have stated to the court they embarked on the lawsuit against the publisher based on information seemingly gathered by the investigator.

The witness had earlier retracted his purported statement in 2023. In a new detailed witness statement made on a recent date, and released by the high court on this week, he reiterated his denial, saying he had never carried out any unlawful act on behalf of the company.

In the new testimony, he asserted he did “not identify” the “purported witness statement on that date”. He stated he believed it was “drafted by someone else”, that the “signature is not mine”, and did reject the truthfulness of a great deal of the information”.

Burrows declared: “I fail to identify the earlier witness statement of that date and I am convinced that my signature on that paper is a fake. Much of it is not composed in my type of language. Additionally, the substance of the statement are largely false.”

He added that he had “at no time” done operations for the Sunday paper or the daily tabloid, apart from one task concerning Sir Richard Branson that excluded any unlawful act”.

Context of the Initial Testimony

Burrows claimed he was on strong medication after a severe physical assault, and drinking heavily, when he was contacted by Graham Johnson, a whistleblower found guilty of voicemail interception, who desired assistance with inquiry on accusations of spying targeting newspapers.

He was connected to a colleague, an individual, who was described as a legal assistant and was compensated £600 a time for guidance.

His testimony claimed he was advised lawsuits against newspapers were likely to be resolved privately, as the publications did not want the publicity or cost of a trial, and were referred to to him as a “flawless fraud” and a “lucrative opportunity”.

The investigator, who said he had stopped operating for publications in 2003, said he had informed the former journalist “a hundred times that the publisher were not one of my employers”.

Present Court Situation

Burrows was originally a testifier for the group, which additionally comprises David Furnish and others, but is now the topic of disputes about the possibility that he will be summoned as a testifier for the proceedings.

A barrister, for the defendant, requested the court to allow him to interrogate the witness, while another barrister, for the group, made an petition to consider his testimony as rumor.

The judge granted the barrister seven days to decide whether he desired to request a witness summons to compel Burrows, and informed him if the witness offered evidence that was inconsistent with the information they had acquired, then he could request to consider him as “uncooperative”.
